SPRINGFIELD, Mo.--Right fielder Christian Overstreet hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to help Missouri State cap a 6-2 victory over North Dakota State in college baseball Sunday, March 7, at Hammons Stadium.
Overstreet was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and shortstop Travis McComack was 3-for-4 for the Bears (4-6), who won three of four games in the weekend series.
North Dakota State designated hitter Zach Wentz was 4-for-4 with a stolen base to lead the Bison (2-5). Wentz pitched the first three innings for NDSU and allowed two runs on seven hits but did not factor in the decision.
NDSU went ahead 2-1 in the top of the third inning when shortstop Max Casper led off with a single and scored three batters later on Wentz's single to right field. Center fielder Michael Riewer followed with a groundout that scored catcher Justin Kline, who walked ahead of Wentz.
Missouri State tied it 2-2 in the bottom of the third with a bases-loaded walk to designated hitter Barrett Noirfalise, and the Bears went ahead in the fifth when first baseman Tyler Ryun hit a two-out double and scored on McComack's single on the next play.
In the eighth, a walk and bunt single set the stage for Overstreet, who one out later fouled off three pitches before homering down the right-field line to make it 6-2.
Missouri State reliever Grant Gordon struck out five batters in three innings of relief and Blake Barber got a strikeout and double play in the ninth to end the game.
That made a winner of Bears starter Pierce Johnson (1-0), who allowed two runs on nine hits with one walk and six strikeouts in five innings.
Casper and Kline both finished 2-for-3 for NDSU. Mark Ries (0-1) pitched four innings of relief and took the loss for the Bison.
North Dakota State is scheduled to play eight games in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational beginning Friday, March 12, against Bowling Green. Game time is 12:30 p.m. ET at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Fla.
