FARGO, N.D.--Eric Cain's two-run single highlighted a four-run seventh inning as South Dakota State rallied past North Dakota State 4-2 to complete a doubleheader sweep in Summit League baseball Saturday, May 15, at Newman Outdoor Field.
South Dakota State won the opener 12-3 behind the pitching of starter Blake Treinen, who had a one-hitter and eight strikeouts through five innings. Treinen allowed two earned runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk to improve to 6-0.
SDSU improved to 33-16 overall and took over sole possession of second place in The Summit League with a 16-7 record. NDSU dropped to 20-27 overall and slipped into sixth place with a 9-13 league record.
Game 1 was scoreless through three innings before SDSU scored four times in the fourth. Joel Blake hit a leadoff single and Jesse Sawyer clubbed his 14th home run of the year to start the scoring, Zach Briggs hit an RBI double and Beau Hanowski had an RBI single.
SDSU went ahead 5-0 in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by Sawyer and John Lee, and the Jacks extended the lead to 10-0 in the sixth with five two-out runs. Billy Stitz singled in Hanowski after a double, Daniel Telford hit a two-run homer, and Cain delivered a two-run single.
NDSU answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Kenny Beese hit a leadoff single and moved to third on Max Casper's double, a wild pitch scored Beese, and Casper came in on Tanner Adam's groundout.
Hanowski was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Blake was 3-for-5 with two runs to lead the Jackrabbits, who had 17 hits in the opening game comapred to five for NDSU.
Bison starter McHale Maristuen dropped to 1-7 with the loss. Maristuen allowed eight runs on 12 hits with one walk and two strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
Game 2 starter Mark Hermes took a shutout into the seventh inning before surrendering a leadoff double by Briggs and a single by Hanowski. SDSU drew back-to-back walks against NDSU closer Anthony Kliniske to pull within 2-1 and Cain's two-run single through the middle of the infield put the Jacks ahead.
Hermes allowed only four hits through the first five innings and escaped a jam in the sixth when Blake hit a leadoff double and was stranded with a strikeout and two fly balls. SDSU also had leadoff men on board in the third and fifth but couldn't score.
Hermes allowed two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks in six-plus innings. Kliniske took the loss for NDSU and dropped to 3-1 on the year.
SDSU closer Trever Vermeulen struck out two over the final 1 2/3 innings and became the winning pitcher. Vermeulen is 7-1 on the year and has not allowed a run in 22 2/3 innings in Summit League play.
NDSU managed only five hits again in the second game. Casper was 1-for-3 in both contests to extend his hitting streak to 10 straight games.
Hanowski was 2-for-3 and Cain was 2-for-4 to lead the Jackrabbits, who have won three games in Fargo for the first time since 1982 after losing 3 of 4 in each of their last three trips.
