FARGO, N.D.--Jay Hartman's two-run double in the bottom of the ninth gave North Dakota State a 5-4 victory over Oakland in the second game of a Summit League baseball doubleheader Saturday, May 8, at Newman Outdoor Field. NDSU won the opening game 7-3.
With the sweep, North Dakota State improved to 19-23 overall and moved into fifth place in The Summit League with an 8-9 record. Oakland dropped to 16-27 overall and slipped into sixth place with a 7-9 league record.
North Dakota State loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth to set up the game-winning hit. Zach Wentz was hit by a pitch, Zach Heidmann dropped a double inside the left field line, and pinch hitter Eric Nutzhorn was intentionally walked.
After a fielder's choice out at the plate, Hartman hit an 0-2 pitch to the gap in right-center field past a drawn-in outfield that was playing the wind coming in from left field. It scored pinch runners Preston Ghizoni and Ben Bruggeman, and would've scored Michael Riewer with a third run if needed.
Oakland took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Mike Carson's sacrifice fly, but NDSU tied it in the bottom of the first on a bases-loaded walk to Riewer.
The Bison went ahead 2-1 in the fourth when Kenny Beese reached on a bunt single and scored on Max Casper's triple down the right field line.
Oakland went ahead 3-2 in the seventh with four straight two-out singles by Brett Geschke, Tim Ryan, Ryan Waldhart and Tommy Jablonski.
NDSU tied the game again in the eighth when Riewer got an infield single moved to second on Hartman's bunt single, moved to third on Beese's sacrifice bunt, and scored on a wild pitch after an intentional walk to ninth-hitting Casper.
The Golden Grizzlies went back ahead 4-3 in the top of the ninth against NDSU closer Anthony Kliniske when John Estes got a leadoff single and scored on Jablonski's one-out single.
Kliniske (3-0) became the winning pitcher after allowing one run on three hits in one full inning. OU reliever Jake Arendsen (1-2) allowed two runs on two hits in one inning and took the loss.
Heidmann was 3-for-4 and Casper was 3-for-3 to lead the Bison in the second game. Waldhart was 4-for-4 and Jablonski was 3-for-4 for the Golden Grizzlies.
In the opener, NDSU broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth when Jallen scored on Wentz's infield groundout, and the Bison pulled away with two runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth.
Riewer scored three runs and was 3-for-4 including an RBI single in the sixth, and Casper was 2-for-3 with RBI singles in the second and sixth, and a successful safety squeeze bunt in the eighth.
Beese was 3-for-3 with run-scoring triples in the fourth and eighth innings, tying the school single-game record for triples in a game. NDSU hit four triples in the doubleheader and now has 20 on the season, passing the team single-season record of 17 set by the 1973 Bison.
Kyle Kingsley pitched five innings for the win in the opener and evened his record at 4-4. Kingsley allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
OU starter Kyle Teague struck out five batters in seven innings but dropped to 5-5 with the loss. Teague allowed five runs, two earned with seven hits and one walk.
Jablonski and Aaron Wick were both 2-for-4 in the opener for OU.
The teams are scheduled to close their four-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Sunday, May 9. It will be a 9-inning game followed by a 7-inning game.
NDSU can move into sole possession of fourth place with another doubleheader sweep, or can move into a tie for fourth place with Southern Utah with a split.
