Box Score FARGO, N.D. - Pinch hitter Tyler Steen's three-run double off closer Scott Matyas gave North Dakota State a 5-2 win over Minnesota in college baseball Tuesday, May 3, before a crowd of 1,023 at Newman Outdoor Field.
Steen, who hit a game-winning homer and double against Centenary in two weekend victories, roped the first pitch he saw from Matyas with two outs in the eighth inning after an intentional walk to Zach Wentz loaded the bases.
Closer Jason Mattila pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save of the year and the fifth in his last six outings for North Dakota State (15-21), which won for the 13th time in 16 games.
NDSU opened the scoring in the third inning when Wentz hit a leadoff single, moved to second on catcher Tanner Adam's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Blake Turbak's single to right-center field.
That was the only run until the eighth when Minnesota (16-18) went ahead with a one-out RBI single from Dan Olinger and an RBI double by Kyle Geason.
NDSU's four-run eighth started with a hit-by-pitch to Zach Heidmann and a walk to Nic Obey before Matyas came on in a save opportunity for Billy Soule, who dropped to 2-2 with the loss.
Tim Colwell greeted Matyas with a game-tying double down the right-field line on a 1-2 pitch that moved Obey to third base before an infield popup and strikeout brought up Wentz at the top of the order.
Turbak was 3-for-5 to lead NDSU's 10-hit attack, and Kyle Kingsley evened his record at 3-3 with the win despite allowing both Minnesota runs in his 1 1/3 innings.
Geason was 3-for-4, Justin Gominsky was 3-for-5 and AJ Pettersen was 2-for-4 for the Gophers, who left 11 runners on base compared to 10 for the Bison.
The crowd of 1,023 was the second largest home crowd in school history for NDSU at Newman Outdoor Field behind the 1,079 for the Minnesota game in 2008.
North Dakota State is scheduled to close out its 10-game homestand against North Dakota at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 4. UND is 6-23 overall and has won four of its last five.
