GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Wes Satzinger's ninth-inning bunt hit tied the game and Nick Anderson's single scored the winning run for North Dakota State in a 4-3 victory over North Dakota in college baseball Sunday, April 1, at Kraft Field.
NDSU's Jake Heck pitched a 1-2-3 eighth for the victory and Kyle Kingsley struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth for his second save of the season.
The Bison (18-5) won their school-record 12th straight game, passing the mark of 11 straight over two seasons by the 1909 and 1910 teams. NDSU has won its last six one-run games.
NDSU trailed 3-2 but started the ninth with back-to-back singles from Tim Colwell and Nick Colwell. A fly ball from Zach Wentz put runners on the corners before Satzinger's push bunt toward first base tied it 3-3.
UND (2-16) went to closer Brock Johnson and Anderson roped a 1-0 pitch into center field to score Nick Colwell with the eventual winning run.
Tim Colwell hit a leadoff homer in the first and the Bison took a 2-0 lead in the third when Nick Colwell drew a one-out walk and scored three batters later when Anderson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
UND tied the game with sacrifice flies from Jeff Campbell in the fifth and Sam Alt in the sixth. NDSU squelched another opportunity in the sixth when shortstop Max Casper cut off the throw on a delayed double steal and threw out Seth Means trying to score from third.
Tyler Follis gave UND its first lead of the four-game series in the seventh when he singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a ground ball and scored on Mark Bearmon's two-out single.
The home run was Tim Colwell's first of the season. He went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and has reached base safely in 20 straight. Satzinger also finished 2-for-4.
Follis was 3-for-5 and UND got two hits apiece from Bearmon and Kyle Bolander. Brett DeGagne dropped to 0-2 with the loss despite shutting down NDSU for most of his six innings of relief. He held the Bison to only two hits in his first 5 2/3 innings.
NDSU completed its third four-game series sweep since beginning Division I play in 2005. The Bison host Valley City State at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, before going to Nebraska Omaha for a four-game weekend series April 6-8.
