IPFW Avoids Sweep With 4-3 Win Over North Dakota State

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Clay Hathaway hit a leadoff single in the ninth and scored on an infield ground ball to give IPFW a 4-3 win over North Dakota State in Summit League baseball Sunday, April 29.

Hathaway was 2-for-4 for IPFW (13-31, 5-11), which avoided a four-game series sweep. Reliever Steve Danielak (4-2) struck out three of the five batters he faced for the win.

Nick Anderson was 2-for-3 and John Skrbec was 2-for-4 for North Dakota State (32-11, 9-3). The loss went to NDSU closer Kyle Kingsley (5-3), who struck out two and issued his first three walks of the season in 1 2/3 innings.

It was a 3-3 game in the ninth when Hathaway reached and moved to third on a throwing error on the next play. NDSU intentionally walked Carter DeBoe to load the bases and Hathaway was able to score on Daren Boss' grounder to shortstop.

NDSU took a 1-0 lead in the second when Anderson singled, moved to second on Tyler Steen's groundout, and scored on Skrbec's two-out single to third base after a throwing error.

IPFW went ahead with three straight one-out hits in the fourth. Boss singled and scored on Shane Trevino's triple, and Trevino scored on Kristian Gayday's single.

The Bison tied it 2-2 in the seventh when Wes Satzinger drew a leadoff walk, moved up on Anderson's sac bunt and scored from second on Skrbec's RBI single.

DeBoe's sac fly put IPFW back ahead before NDSU tied it in the eighth. Max Casper hit a leadoff single and made second on an outfield error, got to third on a fly ball and scored on Nick Colwell's single through the middle.

North Dakota State hosts Minot State at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, before starting a four-game Summit League series against Southern Utah at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 4.
