ROCHESTER, Mich. - Kolton Emery pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings and J.D. Moore notched his league-leading 13th save as top-seeded South Dakota State beat No. 3 seed North Dakota State 2-0 in the Summit League baseball championship Sunday, May 26.
North Dakota State had its six-game winning streak snapped and slipped to 26-26 with the loss. South Dakota State improved to 34-22 and forced a second championship game in the double-elimination tournament.
Emery (4-5) scattered seven hits, struck out five and walked none. He retired nine straight between a pair of two-out singles in the first and fourth innings and didn't allow multiple runners until the eighth inning.
NDSU's Michael Leach hit a one-out single and Nick Altavilla got a two-out single before Moore came on to strike out Wes Satzinger looking and end the threat. Moore fanned the first two batters of the ninth before a groundout ended it.
Bison starter Jay Flaa (1-1) pitched a season-high 7 1/3 innings allowing two earned runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Simon Anderson got the final five outs and stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the ninth on two ground balls to third baseman John Skrbec.
Daniel Telford started SDSU's second inning with a leadoff single through the right side on a high throw from Satzinger to Flaa, and Telford scored from second on Aaron Machbitz's two-out single up the middle to give the Jackrabbits a 1-0 lead.
Andrew Melton singled to start the SDSU eighth and moved to third on a sac bunt and balk before Scott Splett's sacrifice fly made it a 2-0 game.
