Colwell, Straka Voted to Capital One Academic All-America First Team

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State center fielder Tim Colwell and starting pitcher John Straka were named to the Capital One Academic All-America first team in Division I baseball Friday, May 31, by a vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Colwell, a junior from Shoreview, Minn., had a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average in university studies and Straka, a senior right-hander from Chaska, Minn., had a 3.89 in exercise science. Colwell was the only repeat selection on the first team. It was Straka's first award.
These are the fifth and sixth Academic All-America awards for North Dakota State at the Division I level and the 11th and 12th in baseball program history. Colwell joins Brian Bachmeier (1984-85) and David Franke (1997-98) as the only back-to-back NDSU award winners.
Colwell started all 53 games and ranked ninth in The Summit League with a .304 batting average while leading the league in hits (66), total bases (89) and runs scored (40). Straka went 8-2 with a 1.67 ERA in 13 starts and 15 appearances pitching six complete games including a school-record three shutouts. He had 90 strikeouts and 11 walks in 108 innings.
To be eligible for Capital One Academic All-America® honors, student-athletes must have a 3.30 or better cumulative GPA on a 4-point scale, sophomore athletic standing, and be a starter or key reserve for their team.
