Berner Claims Hammer Throw, Kath Leads Decathlon for Bison Men’s Track & Field

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State junior Trevor Berner won the Lyle Hokanson Classic hammer throw and freshman Jamison Kath recorded the top marks in four of the five decathlon events on the first day of the Team Nodak Decathlon hosted by NDSU at Schlanser Track and the Ellig Sports Complex on Friday, Apr. 11.
Berner registered a mark of 194-11 (59.41m) to win the hammer throw. It was the second-best throw of his career. Senior Josh Eiler also posted the second-best hammer throw performance of his career at 178-01 (54.27m) for third place on Friday.
Redshirt freshman Alex Renner finished sixth in the hammer throw with a personal-best effort of 164-03 (50.07m).
Kath leads the decathlon field with 3,150 points with five events remaining. The Fargo Davies grad was the top performer in the 100m dash, long jump, shot put and 400m dash on the opening day. Kath opened the day by running 11.55 in the 100m and then jumped 20-09.00 (6.32m) in the long jump. He threw 33-09.50 (10.30m) in the shot put, cleared 5-05.75 (1.67m) in the high jump, and capped the day with a 400m time of 51.95.
Saturday's action begins with the decathlon 110m hurdles at 10 a.m. and the heptathlon long jump at 10:30 a.m. The Lyle Hokanson Classic field events begin with the men's javelin at noon, and the running events start at 2:25 p.m.
