Renner’s Record Leads Seven Bison Titles at Lyle Hokanson Classic

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State redshirt freshman thrower Alex Renner set the school record in the shot put to lead the NDSU men's track & field team to seven event titles at the Lyle Hokanson Classic hosted at Schlanser Track on Saturday, Apr. 12.
Renner threw 56-04.00 (17.17m) in the shot put, breaking the previous record of 55-11.25 set by teammate Brandt Berghuis at the 2013 Summit League Outdoor Championships. Renner now owns the NDSU all-time best marks in the indoor and outdoor shot put as a freshman.
Junior Jerome Begin won the 400m hurdles in a Summit League-leading time of 53.45 seconds. Begin is the reigning league champion in the event.
NDSU junior Spencer Uetz led a Bison sweep of the top three places in the 1500m, crossing the line in 4:07.13 for the win. Sophomore Brendan Skime took second in 4:08.15, and junior Grady Anderson was third in 4:08.41.
Bison sophomore Quinn Baumann won the javelin with the second-best throw of his career, measuring 209-05 (63.84m) today. Grant Mjelstad cleared an outdoor personal best 15-11.00 (4.85m) to win the pole vault, while Brock Larson vaulted 15-05.00 (4.70m) for second place.
Redshirt freshman Jamison Kath carried his first-day lead in the decathlon to his first career multi-event title, winning the decathlon with 5,690 points.
Begin, Alec Espeland, Moses Heppner and Alex Neumiller capped the day with a win in the 4x400m relay, finishing in 3:18.74.
Bison freshman Loren Bothun finished second in his season opener in the 110m hurdles, clocking a time of 14.97 seconds. Redshirt freshman Angus Stoudt placed third in 14.99, and Colin Paarmann was fourth in 15.09.
The Bison claimed second through sixth place in the men's 800m, led by redshirt freshman Dalton Herding taking runner-up honors in 1:54.12. Pres Harris finished third in a personal-best time of 1:54.52, and freshman Jonah Warwick was fourth in 1:54.90. Matt Jennings and Ben Schultz placed fifth and sixth, respectively, for NDSU.
Junior Donte Smart ran to a season-best time of 10.97 seconds in the 100m for third place, and Nate Mattson took fourth in 11.01. Redshirt freshman Ben Neyers earned a fifth-place finish in the 200m with his time of 22.44.
NDSU returns to California next week for a series of meets that includes the Mt. SAC Relays.
