Kelly, Stoudt Post Top Performances for Bison Men in California

AZUSA, Calif. – North Dakota State redshirt freshman Angus Stoudt scored a personal-best 6,520 points to lead a group of four Bison men's track & field athletes competing in the California Invitational decathlon hosted at Azusa Pacific University on Thursday, Apr. 17. Stoudt's score leads The Summit League this season.
The Excelsior, Minn., native placed ninth in the 'A' section of the decathlon. Stoudt opened the second day of competition with a personal-best time of 14.82 seconds in the 110m hurdles, and he capped the day with another personal-best time of 4:44.09 in the 1500m. He improved by 255 points over his decathlon total of 6,265 scored at the UC Riverside Spring Classic earlier this season.
Stoudt's time in the 110m hurdles was the fastest in the decathlon field.
At the Mt. SAC Relays, NDSU junior Brett Kelly clocked a personal-best time of 9:06.68 in the 3,000m steeplechase that ranks fifth in NDSU history. Kelly now ranks 35th in the West Region this season, potentially locking up a spot at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in late May. He trimmed more than seven seconds off his previous personal-best time in the event, recording the fastest steeplechase time by a Bison in seven years.
NDSU redshirt freshman Grant Mjelstad placed third in the 'B' section of the California Invitational decathlon with a new high of 6,463 points, ranking second in The Summit League behind Stoudt. He recorded season-best performances in the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault and 1500m on Thursday. Mjelstad's clearance of 16-00.75 (4.90m) in the pole vault was the top mark in the 'B' section.
Bison junior Beau Gagnon scored a new personal-best 6,172 points for ninth place in the 'B' section. Freshman Matt Neururer finished 13th with 5,963 points.
NDSU will continue competition in California at the Mt. SAC Relays, Bryan Clay Invitational and Beach Invitational over the next two days.
