FARGO, N.D. – The NDSU Bison (11-17, 3-7 Summit) scored five runs in the bottom of the third-inning, helping them to a 6-3 victory over the Western Illinois Leathernecks (11-22, 6-6 Summit) at Newman Outdoor Field Sunday, April 20. With the win, the Bison took the four-game weekend series against WIU, 3-1.
Tim Colwell was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate while Wes Satzinger went 1-for-2, driving in two NDSU runs, to lead the Bison offense. Kyle Kleinendorst, Ben Petersen, John Skrbec and Michael Leach also each collected an RBI in the contest.
In his first collegiate start, pitcher Reed Pfannenstein went seven innings, striking out four while walking only one batter and allowing one earned run, to pick up his inaugural collegiate victory and improve to 1-0 on the season.
Jameson Henning went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Leathernecks while Tom Constand gave up seven hits and six runs in 2.2 innings to take the loss on the mound for WIU and fall to 1-6 on the season.
The Bison took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after Leach singled up the middle, scoring Skrbec.
Western Illinois deadlocked the game at one in the top of the third with a Henning RBI single that scored Travis Stafford. The Leathernecks nearly got two runs on the hit, but Colwell threw out Zack Burling at the plate to keep the game tied.
The NDSU offense awoke in the bottom-half of the inning, plating five runs to open a 6-1 advantage. Satzinger doubled down the left field line, plating Colwell and Aiden Hook, before a Kleinendorst single to right field drove in Satzinger. Petersen batted in the fourth run of the inning after he sent a single to left, scoring Kleinendorst, and Skrbec plated Petersen for the fifth run on a double to left center.
The Leathernecks added a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, but that was as close as they would get, leading to the 6-3 Bison win.
With the win, NDSU improves to 11-17 overall and 3-7 in The Summit League while Western Illinois falls to 11-22 on the season and 6-6 in league play.
The Bison are scheduled to return to the diamond Tuesday, April 22, in a non-conference game against Dakota Wesleyan at Newman Outdoor Field. First-pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
