OMAHA, Neb. – The North Dakota State baseball team (13-18, 4-8 Summit) split a Summit League doubleheader against the Omaha Mavericks (21-14, 6-4 Summit) Friday, April 25, at the Ballpark at Boys Town in Omaha, dropping the first game, 7-2, before rebounding to win game two, 8-6, in 10 innings.
The game two victory snapped Omaha's five-game winning streak.
David Ernst (3-5) and Aiden Hook (3-6) each recorded three hits to lead the Bison in game two while Jon Hechtner and John Skrbec both had two RBI.
Jay Flaa pitched two innings in relief, striking out two, to claim the win and move to 1-2 on the season while Trevor Jaunich secured his third save of the season, pitching 0.2 innings of no-hit baseball.
Clayton Taylor paced the Mavs at the plate, going 3-for-6, while Caleb Palensky had four RBI for Omaha.
Anthony Falcone took the loss on the mound for Omaha to fall to 1-4 overall.
Wes Satzinger (2-3), Kyle Kleinendorst (2-3) and Michael Leach (2-3) each collected two hits in game one to lead the Bison.
David Ernst pitched his third complete game of the season, going six innings, but suffered the loss after allowing all seven Omaha runs to dip to 3-3 overall.
Daniel Jewett went 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Maverick offense in game one.
Tyler Fox picked up the win on the mound for Omaha to improve to 7-1 overall.
In the second game, the Bison plated three runs in the top of the seventh to erase a 5-3 deficit. Skrbec drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Kleinendorst and Hook delivered an RBI single through the right side allowing Ernst to score and tie the game at five. Tim Colwell gave the Bison a 6-5 lead the very next at bat, hitting an RBI single to shortstop to score Skrbec.
Omaha tied the game at six in the bottom of the eighth on a Taylor single and neither team could score in the ninth to force extra innings.
The Bison regained an 8-6 lead in the top of the 10th. Hechtner singled to left center, driving in Kleinendorst, and Skrbec delivered a single to right field, scoring Ernst, before a fielder's choice ended the inning.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Mavs were able to load the bases with one out, but Jaunich entered the game and worked out of the jam with an infield fly ball to first base and foul out to the catcher, securing the 8-6 win for NDSU.
In the first game, Omaha scored two runs in the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie, helping them to an eventual 7-2 win.
With the split, the Bison are now 13-18 overall and 4-8 in Summit League action while Omaha is 21-14 and 6-4 in league play.
