Throwers Lead Bison Men into NCAA West Preliminary Rounds

The North Dakota State University men's track & field team has qualified six student-athletes to the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, marking the largest group of national qualifiers in the school's Division I history. With sophomore Brandt Berghuis qualifying in the shot put and hammer throw, the Bison will have seven men's entries at the meet – an improvement of one over the previous high of six set last season.
The meet will be hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., on May 29-31.

Thursday, May 29
2 p.m. – Shot put – Alex Renner, Brandt Berghuis
5:30 p.m. – Javelin – Quinn Baumann, Tyler Parker
Friday, May 30
10 a.m. – Hammer throw – Trevor Berner, Brandt Berghuis
8:50 p.m. – 3,000m steeplechase (quarterfinal) – Brett Kelly
How to Advance
In the shot put, javelin and hammer throw, the 16 best marks after tiebreakers will qualify from the first round of three preliminary attempts to the final round of three additional attempts. The top 12 marks overall advance to the NCAA Championships.
In the 3,000m steeplechase, the top three from three quarterfinal heats, plus the next three fastest times (12), advance to the NCAA Championships.
Elite Company
The NDSU men have six entries in the throwing events for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, tying them for the fourth-most in the nation. Only California, Minnesota and Georgia have more entries in the men's throwing events at the NCAA Prelims.
Last Year
Tyler Parker had a personal-best performance in the javelin at the NCAA West Prelims last season, throwing 215-0 (65.53m) for 17th place overall. Brandt Berghuis placed 36th in the shot put last season, posting a mark of 53-06.25 (16.31m).
Everyone's Back
None of the Bison men's athletes competing at the NCAA West Prelims are seniors. Renner is a redshirt freshman, Berghuis, Parker and Baumann are sophomores, and Berner and Kelly are juniors.
