FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The North Dakota State men's track & field team had four throwers compete at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds at John McDonnell Field on Thursday. All four outperformed their rankings on the pre-meet performance lists, with sophomore Quinn Baumann authoring the story of the day for the NDSU men.
Baumann placed 15th overall in the javelin after entering the NCAA West Prelims ranked 35th, meaning he threw in the first of three flights with the bottom 16 qualifiers in the 48-man field. The sophomore from Grand Forks, N.D., recorded a throw of 209-8 (63.90m) for the best mark in his flight, then had to wait to see if his mark would remain in the top 16 overall for a spot in the finals and three more attempts.
After nearly three hours of waiting, Baumann earned his three more throws in the finals, and eventually placed 15th overall. His improvement of 20 places over his pre-meet ranking was the second-best in the field. With the top 12 finishers advancing to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., Baumann came up just three places short.
Baumann's teammate and fellow sophomore Tyler Parker finished 23rd in the javelin after entering the meet with a No. 40 ranking. Parker threw 203-10 (62.14m) for the third-best performance of his season.
Redshirt freshman Alex Renner and sophomore Brandt Berghuis both also earned higher finishes than their qualifying spots in the shot put. Renner placed 30th overall with a mark of 55-07.00 (16.94m) after qualifying 36th for the meet. Berghuis made an even bigger leap, taking 31st place at 55-06.50 (16.93m) after entering with the 41st-best mark in the field.
Renner and Berghuis rank first and second, respectively, in NDSU history in the shot put.
On Friday, the NDSU men will be represented by Trevor Berner in the hammer throw (10 a.m.) and Brett Kelly in the 3,000m steeplechase (8:50 p.m.)
