FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Junior Brett Kelly raced to the No. 3 spot on the North Dakota State all-time list in the 3,000m steeplechase to conclude action for the Bison men's track & field team at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds on Friday at John McDonnell Field.
Kelly recorded a six-second personal best, running 8:56.05 to place 18th in the 48-man field. The Bismarck, N.D., native made the most of his opportunity to run at the West Prelims, as he qualified in the 48th and final spot. Now, only Bison greats Jake Januszewski and Curt Bacon have run the steeplechase faster than Kelly.
Only six seconds separated Kelly from 12th place in the meet and a spot at the NCAA Championships.
Sophomore Brandt Berghuis competed in his second event of the West Prelims, placing 36th in the hammer throw with a mark of 189-1 (57.63m). Berghuis was the last accepted entry in the event and entered the meet ranked 48th in the West Region. Between the shot put contested on Thursday and the hammer throw on Friday, Berghuis outperformed his pre-meet rankings by a combined 22 places.
Junior Trevor Berner also competed in the hammer throw, but fouled on all three attempts.
