One year after pulling the signature upset of the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, North Dakota State University alumnus Riley Dolezal will attempt to defend his American javelin title. Dolezal, a volunteer assistant coach for the Bison track & field teams, will compete in the javelin at the 2014 USATF Championships in Sacramento on Sunday, June 29, at noon (PT)/2 p.m. (CT).
The Stanley, N.D., native threw 273-11 (83.50m) to win the USA javelin championship on June 23 last year in Des Moines, Iowa, setting a new lifetime best by 30 feet, 5 inches. Dolezal entered last year's USA Championships with the 14th-best qualifying mark, but posted personal-best efforts on all four of his attempts, with the winner coming on the fourth and final attempt.
With his winning throw ranking him eighth in American history, Dolezal emerged on the international scene as a member of Team USA for the World Championships held in August 2013.
Dolezal, who signed a professional contract with Nike last summer following his victory, enters the USA Championships ranked second this season. Tim Glover, a former Illinois State University athlete, threw 275-7 (84.01m) at the Tennessee Relays on April 12 to hold the country's top mark.
Dolezal will be joined by another former NDSU track & field athlete competing in Sacramento on Sunday, as former Bison Shawn Francis qualified in the pole vault scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. (PT)/1:30 p.m. (CT). Francis claimed runner-up honors at the 2014 USA Indoor Championships in February, clearing a lifetime best 18-02.50 (5.55m).
Both Dolezal and Francis competed for NDSU from 2005-09.
