FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The North Dakota State women's track & field team sent three athletes through to the national quarterfinals on the first day of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds on Thursday at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Ark. Junior Paige Stratioti (800m), senior Faith Kruchowski (800m) and senior Antoinette Goodman (100m) were all among the top 24 performers in their respective events to advance to the next round.
Stratioti earned an automatic qualifying spot in the 800m by finishing third in her heat, crossing the line in 2:07.50. About 15 minutes later, Kruchowski used a late charge over the final 100 meters to do the same, moving up from seventh place to take the third automatic qualifying spot in her heat in 2:09.67.
The 12 qualifiers to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., will be decided at 7:15 p.m. Friday night.
Goodman moved on to the national quarterfinals in the 100m dash, claiming the 24th and final qualifying spot with her time of 11.76 seconds. Goodman will race for a spot at the NCAA Championships at 6:45 p.m. tomorrow night, along with running the first round of the 200m dash at 8:25 p.m.
Sophomore Sierra Rosenau came within two feet and three places of qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the javelin. Her best throw on the day of 154-5 (47.08m) placed her 15th overall, with the top 12 finishers advancing to Eugene, Ore.
Rosenau was just two feet shy of the distance needed to claim 12th place. Her 15th-place finish was an improvement of 30 spots from last year's NCAA West Preliminary Rounds where she took 45th.
Senior school record holder Ashley Tingelstad ran 53.75 in the first round of the 400m dash for 26th place, missing out on advancing to the quarterfinals by two places.
Freshman Rose Jackson finished 27th in the long jump with a leap of 19-03.50 (5.88m) in her first NCAA Prelims appearance. It was Jackson's second-best long jump mark of the season, and she ends her freshman season tied for third on the NDSU all-time list in the event.
Junior Ashley Heinze also made her NCAA West Prelims debut, clocking in at 1:00.69 for 35th place in the 400m hurdles.
Along with the quarterfinal races for Goodman, Stratioti and Kruchowski on Friday, Katelyn Weimerskirch (discus), Deborah John (100m hurdles) and Erin Teschuk (3,000m steeplechase) will also compete for NDSU.
