FARGO, N.D. – A.J. Jacobson scored 16 points and matched his career-high with five assists, and Dexter Werner added 11 points and a career-best six blocks to power the North Dakota State men's basketball team to a 73-64 victory over Montana State on Wednesday evening at Scheels Arena.
NDSU (7-3 overall) won its 29th consecutive home game – a streak that stands as the fifth-longest in all of Division I hoops.
Werner posted six blocks for the second time in his career, matching the feat he first achieved against Minnesota-Crookston on Nov. 25 last season. He came up one block shy of Jason Wenschlag's single-game NDSU record of seven, set in 1991.
Sophomore guard Paul Miller netted 11 points – all in the second half – and grabbed eight rebounds for the Bison.
Montana State (5-5 overall) led by as many as six points in the first half. NDSU used an 8-0 run to take a 28-23 lead with 1:34 left before halftime.
NDSU shot 52 percent from the floor in the second half. The Bobcats held a 42-39 advantage following a Danny Robison three-pointer with 12:32 remaining, but NDSU answered with a 12-3 run to take a 51-45 lead it would not relinquish. The run was capped by two buckets from Werner and a three-pointer by Bison sophomore Malik Clements.
Montana State cut a 10-point deficit to three at 67-64 with just under a minute remaining, but Miller sealed the Bison victory with a clutch three-pointer with 28 seconds on the clock.
NDSU is now 3-0 against the Big Sky Conference this season with wins over Montana, North Dakota and Montana State.
Montana State averaged 80 points over its first nine games of the season, but NDSU held the Bobcats to their second-lowest total with 64 on Wednesday night.
The Bison will travel to Logan, Utah, for three games at the Global Sports Hoops Showcase on Dec. 21-23. NDSU opens against Idaho State at 6:30 p.m. (CT) on Monday, Dec. 21.
