PHOENIX, Ariz. – The North Dakota State baseball team (0-1) dropped its 2015 season opener on Friday, Feb. 13, at Grand Canyon (1-0) at a sold out Brazell Stadium.
Juniors
Aiden Hook and
Taylor Sanders and freshman
Brayden Resch each recorded a pair of hits in the game, with Sanders going a team-best 2-for-3 at the plate. Hook and Resch each went 2-for-4 on the night, while juniors
Jon Hechtner and
Juan Gamez and freshman
Mason Pierzchalski each tallied a RBI.
Senior right-handed pitcher
David Ernst took the loss on the mound for NDSU to fall to 0-1 on the season. Ernst struck out three, walked two and surrendered two earned runs on seven hits.
Junior right-hander
Brian VanderWoude struck out a career-high six batters in three innings of relief for the Bison.
NDSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the Antelopes in the top of the third inning after Hook led off the frame with a double to right-center, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Hechtner's RBI ground out. Grand Canyon answered in the bottom-half of the inning, though, plating a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead.
The Bison retook a 3-2 advantage in the top of the fourth. Senior
John Skrbec led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a Sanders single and GCU error and crossed home plate on Pierzchalski's RBI ground out. Gamez then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Sanders, allowing North Dakota State to regain the lead.
NDSU maintained the advantage until the bottom of the fifth, when the Lopes were able to plate four runs to gain a 6-3 edge. GCU's Chad De La Guerra, the WAC Preseason Player of the Year, started the scoring with a RBI single to center to tie the game at three, and David Walker scored on a failed pickoff attempt to put the Antelopes back in front, 4-3. Garrison Schwartz increased the Grand Canyon lead to 5-3 with a single to center that scored De La Guerra. A Bison error allowed Schwartz to score and increase the GCU lead to 6-3.
The Bison are scheduled to face Bradley (1-0) in game two of the Grand Canyon University Classic on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. MT (2 p.m. CT) at Brazell Stadium.
