PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. –
Juan Gamez hit a grand slam to left field in the top of the seventh inning to lift the North Dakota State baseball team (1-5) to a 5-0 shutout win over the Kansas Jayhawks (3-6) on Friday, Feb. 27, in the Snowbird Baseball Classic at North Charlotte Regional Park in Port Charlotte.
The win is the first-ever over a Big 12 Conference opponent for the Bison.
After
Brayden Resch,
John Skrbec and
Danny Regan each drew walks to load the bases in the seventh, Gamez stepped to the plate and drove a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence to clear the bases and put the Bison on top, 4-0. The grand slam was Gamez's first hit as a Bison.
The Bison got an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning to increase the lead to 5-0 after Gamez led off the frame with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Paul Funk, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on
Drew Fearing's RBI double to right field.
Gamez, Fearing, Resch, Skrbec, Funk,
Ben Petersen and
Mason Pierzchalski each collected a hit in the contest.
NDSU right-hander
David Ernst pitched seven scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the season and improve to 1-2 overall on the mound. The Fargo product scattered six hits over 104 pitches, striking out five and walking just two batters.
