Berghuis' Weight Throw Title, School Record Spark Bison at Summit League Championships

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State junior Brandt Berghuis opened the 2015 Summit League Indoor Track & Field Championships with a title and an a new school record in the weight throw, highlighting the first day of competition on Friday inside the Shelly Ellig Indoor Track & Field Facility.
Berghuis, a native of Rosemount, Minn., won the weight throw with a lifetime-best toss of 63-08.25 (19.41m) to break Casey Orgon's NDSU record of 63-6 set in 2012. It was Berghuis' first career Summit League championship.
Senior Lucas DeGree earned a runner-up finish with a PR in the 3,000m. His time of 8:24.51 ranks him eighth all-time at NDSU in the event. Bison junior Brendan Skime finished fifth, and senior Brett Kelly was sixth.
NDSU junior Colin Paarmann registered a new lifetime-best mark in the long jump by one foot, jumping 23-06.00 (7.16m) for a third-place finish.
NDSU stands in second place in the league standings through five scored events with 55 points. South Dakota leads the men's team race with 60 points.
The Bison men are ranked 1-3-4-5-7-8 in the heptathlon after the first day. Sophomore Angus Stoudt is the leader with 2,786 points through four of the seven events. Grant Mjelstad is currently in third place.
In preliminary action, NDSU qualified multiple men to Saturday's finals in several events. The Bison put four in the 60m hurdles final with Parker McKittrick, Brock Larson, Paarmann and Stoudt. Landon Jochim (49.47), Wesley DeLong and Jerome Begin all advanced to the 400m dash final. Jonah Warwick and Matt Neururer moved on in the 800m.
The Summit League Indoor Championships resume at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Running events start at 1 p.m.
