Bison Men’s Throwers Dominate to Open Lead at Summit League Championships

MACOMB, Ill. – The North Dakota State men's track & field team racked up 66 points in two throwing events on the first day of the Summit League Outdoor Championships, opening up an early lead in the hunt for its sixth straight team title.
NDSU leads the men's team race with 67 points through three events on the first day. South Dakota State is second with 18 points.
The Bison made Summit League history in the javelin, sweeping the top seven places for 38 of a possible 39 points. Sophomore Matti Mortimore claimed the title with a meet record throw of 237-0 (72.24m), coming only four inches shy of his own school record in the event. Freshman Austin Schmidt registered a personal-best throw of 220-2 (67.11m) to take second place and rank fifth all-time at NDSU.
Tyler Parker, Quinn Baumann, Adam Coykendall, Brock Larson and Kellen Feeney placed third through seventh, respectively. Baumann threw a season-best 204-11 (62.45m) to move into the top 50 in the NCAA West Region.
The Bison had six placewinners and scored 32 points in the javelin in each of the last two years.
In the hammer throw, NDSU finished 1-2-3-6-8 for 28 team points, led by an extraordinary effort from sophomore Alex Renner. Renner posted a mark of 201-5 (61.39m) to win the title – a personal-best by 15 feet. His performance ranks him No. 2 in school history and earns him a spot at the NCAA West Prelims at the end of May.
Renner has increased his personal-best in the hammer throw by 22 feet since the start of the season.
Brandt Berghuis threw 194-11 (59.42m) for runner-up honors, and Trevor Berner took third at 187-8 (57.21m). Redshirt freshman Steffan Stroh was sixth with a personal-best toss of 181-5 (55.31m), and Conrad Schwarzkopf finished eighth.
Senior Marty Joyce took eighth in the 10,000m run, finishing in 32:00.12.
NDSU sophomore Angus Stoudt leads the decathlon by 366 points, totaling 3,643 points through five events for a first-day personal best. Stoudt registered the top mark in the decathlon field in four of the five events contested on Wednesday.
Brock Larson stands second in the decathlon standings with 3,277 points, Beau Gagnon is fourth with 3,205 points, and Grant Mjelstad is fifth with 3,136 points.
Competition will continue at Western Illinois University's Hanson Field on Thursday and Friday.
