400m Hurdles Trio Rolls On at NCAA West Preliminary Rounds

AUSTIN, Texas – The trio of sophomore Morgan Milbrath, junior Melissa Kitching and senior Ashley Heinze led the North Dakota State women's track & field team on the first day of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds on Thursday inside Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Bison went a perfect 3-for-3 in the 400m hurdles, advancing all three women through to the national quarterfinals on Friday night. Milbrath clocked 59.23 for the 10th-fastest time in the prelims. Kitching ran 59.50, and Heinze finished in 1:00.31 for the 24th and final qualifying spot.
Milbrath, Kitching and Heinze will race in the quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow evening. The top 12 finishers in each event at the Preliminary Rounds will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 10-13.
NDSU sophomore Katelyn Weimerskirch posted a 22-inch personal best in the hammer throw, hitting 194-2 (59.19m) for 22nd place after entering the meet ranked 45th in the West Region. Emily Lesser placed 32nd with a throw of 184-2 (56.15m), and Courtney Pasiowitz took 39th with a mark of 180-8 (55.08m).
Lesser, Weimerskirch and Pasiowitz end the season ranked first, second and third, respectively, in school history.
Bison sophomore Amy Andrushko made her NCAA Prelims debut, running 2:11.73 in the 800m for 39th place.
The Bison women will continue competition at the NCAA West Prelims over the next two days. NDSU will have entries in four events tomorrow, beginning at 12 p.m. with Weimerskirch in the discus.
