BEIJING, China – North Dakota State junior Erin Teschuk ran the best steeplechase race of her life on the biggest stage in track & field, clocking 9:40.07 for a new school record at the IAAF World Championships on Monday morning.
Teschuk (Winnipeg, Manitoba) finished 25th out of 45 competitors in the 3,000m steeplechase. She trimmed more than two seconds off her previous best of 9:42.15 in the event – set at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June where she placed fifth.
At only 20 years old, Teschuk now stands as the third-fastest Canadian woman ever in the steeplechase. Her time meets the qualifying standard for the 2016 Olympic Games, so a top-3 finish at the Canadian Olympic track & field trials next summer would put Teschuk in position to represent Canada in Rio.
Teschuk won the Canadian national championship in the steeplechase on July 3 of this year.
In the 2014-15 academic year, Teschuk became the first woman in NDSU history to qualify for the NCAA Championships in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track at the Division I level. She broke NDSU records in seven different events during the year, and her three first-team All-America citations are the most ever by a Bison.
Of the 45 women who ran the steeplechase inside Beijing National Stadium on Monday morning, Teschuk was one of only six to record a personal-best time.
Teschuk has two seasons of cross country eligibility and one season each of indoor and outdoor track remaining at NDSU.
