Four Unattached NDSU Wrestlers Claim Ridgewater Open Individual Crowns

WILLMAR, Minn.--Four unattached North Dakota State University freshmen -- 141 David Flynn, 184 Alex Bleeker, 197 Cordell Eaton and 285 Dan Stibral -- claimed individual titles in their respective weight classes at the Ridgewater College Open on Saturday, Jan. 9.
Eaton (Long Grove, Iowa/North Scott H.S.) won his third Open tournament of the season with a 4-0 record including a fall in 43-seconds over Ridgewater's Logan Zaske and 12-4 major decision against MSU Moorhead's Austin Warren in the 197-pound weight class. Eaton improved to 18-5 with six pins and four major decisions this season. He won the Bison Open and the MSU Moorhead Dragon Open Red Division earlier this year.
Flynn (Jordan, Minn./Scott West H.S.) won three straight matches to win the 141-pound division including an 11-0 major decision over St. Cloud State's John Riddick in the championship match. He opened with a 15-0 tech fall over unattached Theo Gee and posted a 5-0 decision over St. Cloud State's Ryan Rodorigo. Flynn improved to 16-9 this season.
Bleeker (Pekin, Ill./Pekin Community H.S.) posted three victories to take the 184-pound weight class including a 1-0 decision over Cole Henne of Southwest Minnesota State. He opened with a fall at 4:53 over unattached Jeba Doe and advanced with a 10-1 major decision over Payton DuPlayee of Minnesota State Mankato. Bleeker is now 9-10 on the season.
Going 3-0 in the 285-pound division was Stibral (Tabor, S.D./Bon Homme-Scotland H.S.) including a 2-0 decision over Minnesota State Mankato's Chris Zimmer. He opened with a fall at 58-seconds against unattached Zach Wardle and posted a 13-5 major decision in the semis vs. Quinn Bullard of Southwest Minnesota State.
Four other unattached NDSU freshmen also placed in the top six including Nick Mergen (Albany, Minn./Albany H.S.), who was runner-up at 157-pounds and Vin Feola (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman H.S.), who placed third at 285. Wyatt Becker (Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River H.S.) finished sixth at 141-pounds, while Sam Gilseth (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) was sixth at 149.
