FARGO, N.D. — North Dakota State 184-pounder Tyler McNutt scored the only three points of the third period as the Green edged the Yellow 24-23 in the North Dakota State University wrestling scrimmage held Saturday, Oct. 29, before 125 spectators in the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
 
North Dakota State is scheduled to open the 2016-17 season against Iowa State University in a Big 12 Conference dual at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, in the Scheels Center at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex.
 
McNutt, a redshirt sophomore from Saint Joseph, Mo., and Dylan Urbach were tied 4-4 entering the third period. McNutt picked up an early escape and a late takedown to earn a 7-4 decision.
 
Following a scoreless first period, McNutt and Urbach traded reversals. Urbach gained a point on an escape, but McNutt tallied a late takedown to tie things at 4-all in the second.
 
McNutt won two matches overall, opening with a 6-2 win over Logan Paxton. Urbach defeated Charley Popp 8-3 in two of the four prelim matches.
 
North Dakota State's pair of returning two-time NCAA qualifiers, 125-pound Josh Rodriguez, and 157-pound Clay Ream, both recorded tech falls during the afternoon.
 
Rodriguez, a redshirt senior from Guadalupe, Calif., rolled to a 20-4 tech fall at 4:38 against redshirt freshman Arthur Payne. Rodriguez is ranked as high as No. 8 in several preseason rankings. Payne split a pair of matches, opening with an 11-9 sudden victory-1 overtime win over Tirso Lara.
 
Ream, a redshirt junior from Wentzville, Mo., posted an 18-3 tech fall at 6:04 against freshman Nick Knutson. Ream is ranked No. 14 in the preseason rankings.
 
Joe Umlauf won a pair of matches. Umlauf opened with a 6-2 win over David Flynn and held off Tommy Walton for a 3-2 decision in his second match. His win over Walton put the Yellow ahead 23-21.
