FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State men's track & field team got the 2017 indoor season started by hosting the Dakota Classic at the Shelly Ellig Indoor Track & Field Facility on Friday.

Competing unattached, NDSU junior
Payton Otterdahl posted a mark that would have broken the school record in the weight throw by 13 inches. His toss of 65-07.50 (20.00m) earned first place and topped a 1-2-3-4-5-6 finish by the Bison men in the event.

Otterdahl also won the shot put with a personal-best mark of 58-10.75 (17.95m), leading a sweep of the top six places by the Bison men. Junior
Steffan Stroh was second at 55-10.25 (17.02m), and senior
Brian Blasey registered a career-best shot put mark of 55-06.25 (16.92m) to rank seventh all-time at NDSU.

Senior
Conrad Schwarzkopf threw a personal-best in the weight throw by a foot, 65-06.25 (19.97m) to extend his own school record that still stands with Otterdahl competing unattached. Stroh took third in the weight throw.

Landon Jochim won the 400m dash with a strong opener of 48.85. Sophomores
Jacob Richter (1:22.23) and
Byrne Curl (1:22.79) finished first and second, respectively, in the 600m run.

Bison sophomore
Karter Gorney ran a personal-best time of 6.95 seconds in the 60m dash for a runner-up finish. Unattached NDSU junior J.T. Butler, a transfer from St. Cloud State, won the 200m dash in 22.32.

NDSU freshman Chris Cook tied for second in the high jump in his first collegiate meet, clearing 6-04.00 (1.93m).

Sophomore
Ted Rainwater-Walker leads the Dakota Classic heptathlon after Day 1, scoring 2,864 points through the first four events. Unattached NDSU athletes
Matt Neururer (2,796) and Tony Ukkelberg (2,774) stand second and third, respectively.

The heptathlon will conclude on Saturday, beginning with the 60m hurdles at 10 a.m.
