LAWRENCE, Kan. – North Dakota State junior Matti Mortimore advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the javelin for the second year in a row, posting a qualifying mark at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds on Friday evening after a lengthy weather delay.
Mortimore finished seventh at the West Prelims, throwing 231-2 (70.47m) on his second of three attempts. The mark was well short of his school record of 248-8 (75.79m), but more than enough to finish in the top 12 on Friday and advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 8.
The javelin competition was delayed for approximately four hours between the second and third flights due to inclement weather.
Mortimore placed seventh in the javelin at the NCAA Championships as a sophomore last season, earning first-team All-America honors. He becomes the first NDSU men's track & field athlete to qualify for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships twice.
NDSU senior Quinn Baumann finished 22nd in the javelin with a throw of 210-2 (64.06m), and sophomore Austin Schmidt placed 28th at 204-9 (62.40m). Baumann concludes his NDSU career ranked sixth in school history in the event.
The Bison men will wrap up competition at the NCAA West Prelims on Saturday. The men's discus competition featuring Payton Otterdahl and Steffan Stroh will begin at 9 a.m. after being postponed from Friday. Jerome Begin and Parker McKittrick will run the 110m hurdles at noon, and the men's shot put will start at 2:30 p.m. with five NDSU athletes throwing.
