FARGO, N.D. - King Frazier scored on a 25-yard run on the first play of overtime and Jaylaan Wimbush broke up a fourth-and-9 pass to seal top-ranked North Dakota State's 24-17 overtime victory over No. 6-ranked Charleston Southern in the FCS Kickoff game Saturday, Aug. 27.

A crowd of 18,881 witnessed the first ever overtime game at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome. It was NDSU's first overtime game since the 2010 quarterfinal loss at Eastern Washington and snapped a four-game OT losing streak since 1997.

North Dakota State took its first lead 17-10 early in the fourth quarter when Omaha products Easton Stick and RJ Urzendowski connected on a 47-yard touchdown play. Stick finished 17 of 27 passing for 194 yards with two TDs and one interception.

Charleston Southern tied it two possessions later when Mike Holloway scored on a six-yard run with 2:59 to play. Kameron Brown hauled in a 16-yard pass on fourth-and-10 to keep the seven-play, 42-yard drive alive.

NDSU marched to the CSU 35 on its final drive of regulation but Troy McGowens intercepted Stick and returned it 30 yards to the Bison 40. Freshman kicker Jacob Smoak, who connected from 46 yards earlier in the game, missed a game-winning try from 51 yards.

Frazier had 79 yards on 11 carries to lead the Bison rushing attack. He bolted around the right end on the winning score and went untouched to the pylon, where he was nearly pushed out. Official replay confirmed his touchdown.

NDSU's two new starting cornerbacks both factored into the winning defensive stand. Jalen Allison batted away a first-down pass before Wimbush broke up his third pass of the night on the fourth-down try despite an offensive pass interference call.

Holloway finished with a game-high 126 rushing yards and two TDs. NDSU wide receiver Darrius Shepherd made four catches for 64 yards including a 23-yard TD catch that tied the game 10-10 in the third quarter.

Linebacker MJ Stumpf made eight tackles to lead the Bison defense, linebacker Pierre Gee-Tucker and defensive end Greg Menard each had six stops, and Matt Plank had six tackles after playing all but one snap of the second half in place of starting middle linebacker Nick DeLuca.

North Dakota State is off for one week before returning to action at home Saturday, Sept. 10, against Eastern Washington. The Eagles open at Washington State next week.
