Mortimore Extends NCAA-Leading Javelin Mark at Stanford Invitational

FARGO, N.D. - Senior Matti Mortimore extended his school-record and NCAA-leading mark in the javelin throw at the Stanford Invitational to highlight the first day of action for the North Dakota State men's track and field team Friday, March 31, in a pair of west coast meets.
Mortimore, a two-time All-American and Summit League champion, notched his seventh victory in a Bison uniform with a distance of 254 feet, 2 inches (77.47m) that was 13 inches better than his winning mark from two weeks ago at Arizona State.
NDSU finished 1-2 in the men's javelin at Stanford with Austin Schmidt of Stanley, N.D., throwing 225 feet, 10 inches (68.84m) for second place.
At the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, redshirt freshman Elliott Stone of Bismarck, N.D., ran the eighth-best time in school history in his outdoor 5,000-meter run debut with a time of 14 minutes, 38.75 seconds.
The Bison got a pair of personal bests in the 1,500-meter run from junior Brant Gilbertson of Watertown, S.D., who ran a 3:55.46 and freshman Tim Heikkila of Maple, Wis., who clocked in at 3:55.55.
