Renner, NDSU 4x400 Relay Win Titles at Beach Invitational

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The North Dakota State men's track & field team closed out a stretch of four meets in four days at the Beach Invitational on Saturday with a pair of event titles and multiple personal-best performances.
Senior Alex Renner won the shot put at Long Beach State with a mark of 62-05.00 (19.02m), coming within seven inches of his school record in the event. Later in the day, Renner traveled to the Mt. SAC Relays and earned a runner-up finish with the exact same distance – 62-05.00 (19.02m). Only the NCAA indoor national champion, Mostafa Hassan of Colorado State, defeated Renner on Saturday.
Aron Klos, Jacob Richter, Byrne Curl and Landon Jochim raced to a 4x400m relay title in 3:14.53 to close the Beach Invitational, with an unofficial split of 46.6 for Jochim on the anchor.
Senior Brian Blasey threw a personal-best of 54-09.50 (16.70m) in the shot put, moving up to eighth all-time at NDSU.
Bison freshman Tim Heikkila raced to a personal-best time of 3:53.31 in the 1500m, ranking second in The Summit League this season. Sophomore Karter Gorney clocked a personal-best 10.83 seconds in the 100m dash.
Jochim was runner-up in the elite section of the 400m at Long Beach, finishing in 47.84, and Richter ran 49.08.
Klos, J.T. Butler, Gorney and Jochim clocked 41.66 in the 4x100m relay for seventh place.
Byrne Curl was NDSU's top performer in the 800m, running 1:53.50. Junior Brant Gilbertson (1:54.57) and senior Matt Jennings (1:54.74) bounced back with strong times after significant personal-bests in distance races earlier in the week.
The Bison return home to host the Lyle Hokanson Classic on Apr. 21-22 in Fargo.
