FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State men's track & field team hosted its first home meet of the 2017 outdoor season on Saturday, competing in the Lyle Hokanson Classic at Schlanser Track.
Junior sprinter Landon Jochim won the 400m dash, running 47.10 for a new outdoor personal-best that ranks fourth-fastest in NDSU history. It was the second-fastest 400m of Jochim's career, behind only his 47.07 at the Summit League Indoor Championships earlier this year.
Junior Steffan Stroh took the shot put title a day after winning the hammer throw, posting a toss of 58-01.00 (17.70m). He also placed third in the discus at 171-6 (52.27m).
J.T. Butler clocked a season-best 21.66 to win the 200m dash. That was the second impressive race of the day for the Montgomery, Minn., native, as he also ran a season-best 10.74 for second place in the 100m.
Bison sophomore Derek Warner (Long Prairie, Minn.) won the men's 1500m in a personal-best time of 3:57.05. Freshman Tim Heikkila (Maple, Wis.) won the 800m in 1:55.04, and junior Aron Klos (La Crosse, Wis.) took first place in the 400m hurdles in 54.67.
Unattached Bison junior Payton Otterdahl threw a personal-best 182-2 (55.53m) to claim the discus title. Had he been competing for NDSU, the toss would have broken his school record by two and a half feet.
Also competing unattached, freshman thrower Alex Talley recorded a mark of 55-11.75 (17.06m) for third place in the shot put – good enough to rank him sixth all-time at NDSU in the event.
NDSU swept the top three places in the 1500m, with Camron Roehl (3:58.48) and Elliott Stone (4:01.52) taking second and third behind Warner.
Sophomore Ryan Enerson clocked 14.99 seconds in the 110m hurdles for a runner-up finish. Freshman Ben Klimpke took runner-up honors in the long jump, leaping 22-10.00 (6.96m).
Sophomore Karter Gorney ran a season-best time of 10.76 in the 100m dash for third place.
The Bison will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, next weekend to compete in the Drake Relays.
