DES MOINES, Iowa – The North Dakota State men's track & field team placed three athletes in the top five of the shot put at the Drake Relays on Friday afternoon, led by senior Alex Renner who took first place for his first career Drake Relays title.
Renner, an NCAA second-team All-American indoor and outdoor, unleashed a throw of 62-02.25 (18.95m) on his first attempt. No one came within one meter of him for the remainder of the competition.
NDSU senior Conrad Schwarzkopf placed fourth, throwing a season-best 57-10.25 (17.63m). Junior Steffan Stroh took fifth place with a mark of 56-06.50 (17.23m).
"This was my fourth time here, so seeing the progress from my first year and those guys who were at the top then – it makes it fun to have a group of us who came down here and did really well," said Renner. "It's just fun to have North Dakota State guys at the top at a big meet like this."
The weather posed challenges all day long, with steady rain, gusting winds and temperatures around 40 degrees. Renner didn't seem to be bothered.
"It's a mental thing," said Renner. "The biggest challenge is staying loose in between throws. Fortunately, we practice in conditions like this often. We're prepared leading up to a meet like this. It's the same conditions for everyone, so you've got to go out there and compete."
Ted Rainwater-Walker, J.T. Butler, Karter Gorney and Landon Jochim finished 10th in the 4x100m relay in 42.72. Jacob Richter, Jochim, Butler and Byrne Curl took 11th in the 4x400m relay prelims with a time of 3:17.28.
At the Kip Janvrin Open in Indianola, Iowa, Camron Roehl (3:56.19) and Elliott Stone (3:56.58) both ran personal-bests in the 1500m, to finish second and third, respectively. Stone also came back to clock 1:56.44 in the 800m.
Sophomore Ryan Enerson was the runner-up in the 110m hurdles, running 15.14. Brian Ferry was fifth in the 400m hurdles in 55.20.
Competition will continue at the Drake Relays on Saturday.
