DES MOINES, Iowa – The North Dakota State women's track & field team won the sprint medley relay and earned a runner-up finish in the Hy-Vee Cup team standings at the Drake Relays on Saturday.
The Bison women were the only team to place in the top eight in the 4x100m, 4x400m, 4x800m, sprint medley and distance medley relays. Ohio State captured the Hy-Vee Cup team trophy with 24 points, but NDSU finished second with 22 points in front of Oklahoma State, Iowa, Purdue, Iowa State, Northern Iowa and Kansas State.
"I can't say enough about how our ladies competed today," said NDSU head women's coach Stevie Keller. "They showed a lot of grit and battled with some of the better schools in the country. To win one relay and place in all five at Drake – that takes a special group. Our ladies work really hard, and I'm really proud of how they represented us this weekend on this stage."
The Bison kick-started the day with a victory in the sprint medley on Saturday morning. Rose Jackson, Amanda Levin, Alexis Woods and Amy Andrushko ran 3:52.33 for the fourth-fastest time in school history, winning by a margin of nearly two seconds. It was NDSU's second Drake Relays sprint medley relay title in four years.
Kayla Huhnerkoch, Gabby Grommesh, Jenny Guibert and Annika Rotvold kept the momentum rolling, clocking the fourth-fastest distance medley in NDSU history and taking eighth place in 11:51.06.
The Bison women claimed sixth in the 4x100m relay with Jackson, Levin, Grommesh and Woods. NDSU capped the meet with a third-place finish in the 4x400m with the quartet of Woods, Morgan Milbrath, Andrushko and Jackson.
Despite a fall coming out of the water pit on a 45-degree day, senior Taylor Janssen placed fourth in the 3,000m steeplechase in 10:21.44.
Bison sophomore Shelby Gunnells finished sixth in the shot put, throwing 48-06.75 (14.80m). Katelyn Weimerskirch took sixth in the hammer, throwing 195-4 (59.54m), and freshman Amy Herrington was ninth at 184-6 (56.25m).
Sophomore Klara Lyon tied her personal-best in the pole vault for the second week in a row, clearing 12-09.50 (3.90m) for eighth place. Junior Lauren Gietzen also vaulted 12-09.50 (3.90m) to tie for ninth.
The Bison will compete next on Friday, May 5, when they host the NDSU Tune-Up.
