OMAHA, Neb. – The North Dakota State University baseball team opened a three-game Summit League series against the Omaha Mavericks with a doubleheader sweep on Thursday, April 5, at Seymour Smith Park. The Bison won game one in 10 innings, 2-1, before shutting out the Mavs in the nightcap, 2-0.
North Dakota State (13-14, 6-5 Summit League) and Omaha (11-17, 7-4 Summit League) are scheduled to close out the series with a single game Saturday, April 7, at 2 p.m.
The NDSU pitching staff combined to allow just one earned run on eight hits with 11 strikeouts and only seven walks in the twin bill.
Senior left-hander Blake Stockert tossed his first-career complete game shutout in game two, striking out six while giving up just three hits, to improve to 3-1 on the mound in 2018.
In the extra-inning triumph in game one, sophomore right-hander Riley Johnson surrendered just one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings before being relieved by closer Kevin Folman, who earned the victory on the mound to move to 2-1 on the season after throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
With the game tied, 1-1, entering the top of the 10th inning in the opener, Jayse McLean led-off the frame with a single up the middle, before Logan Busch worked a walk to put runners on first and second with nobody out. McLean was able to steal third base, before crossing home plate on Sean Noel's RBI fielder's choice bunt, giving NDSU the 2-1 advantage.
Folman worked around a one-out error and a pair of two-out walks with a strikeout in the bottom of the 10th, sealing the win.
Sophomore Bennett Hostetler went 1-of-3 at the plate with a double, run scored and RBI, leading NDSU at the plate in game one.
Grant Suponchick tallied a pair of hits to pace the Mavs in the batter's box, while Omaha reliever Cal Hehnke (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing an earned run on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts in two innings.
In game two, NDSU plated runs in the sixth and eighth innings to take a 2-0 lead – a lead it would not relinquish the remainder of the game.
McLean scored both runs for the Bison in the game, crossing home plate on Nick Emanuel's RBI single up the middle in the sixth and Tucker Rohde's RBI single through the middle in the eighth.
Busch and McLean each tallied two hits to lead North Dakota State at the plate.
Cole Thibodeau, Thomas DeBonville and Braden Rogers each compiled a hit, leading Omaha offensively.
UNO starter Spencer Koelewyn (2-2) took the loss on the mound after giving up one earned run on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts in five innings.
