NCAA Shot Put Leader Otterdahl Advances to Eugene

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – North Dakota State junior and NCAA shot put leader Payton Otterdahl secured his spot in the NCAA Championships on Saturday evening, advancing to the national meet in his second event.
Otterdahl threw 65-06.25 (19.97m) to place third at the NCAA West Prelims, with the top 12 finishers advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 6-9. He also qualified in the discus Friday, becoming the first Bison men's track & field athlete to compete in two events at the Division I national meet.
The Bison placed four men in the top 22 of the shot put on Saturday. Behind Otterdahl, redshirt freshman Alex Talley finished 17th at 59-11.75 (18.28m), senior Steffan Stroh took 21st at 59-02.00 (18.03m), and sophomore Michael Keogan was 22nd with a mark of 58-09.25 (17.91m).
Senior Austin Schmidt placed 15th in the javelin with his throw of 214-8 (65.43m), missing a spot in Eugene by three places. He ends his career ranked fourth all-time at NDSU in the javelin.
Senior school record holder Jake Leingang finished 38th in the 5,000m with a time of 14:27.09.
Stroh concludes his Bison career as the school record holder in the hammer throw, as well as ranking second in NDSU history in the discus, third in the indoor shot put, fourth in the weight throw, and fifth in the outdoor shot put.
With Jacob McBride (hammer throw) joining Otterdahl in Eugene, the Bison men will have three entries at the NCAA Championships – a new high in the school's Division I era.
