In the hammer throw, shot put and discus, each athlete will receive three preliminary attempts. The top nine performers will advance to the final round, earning three additional attempts.
All-America Honors
The top eight finishers in all events will earn first team All-American honors, places 9 through 16 will be named second team All-Americans, and all other national meet competitors will receive honorable mention All-American status.
Top Placer
Matti Mortimore owns the highest NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships finish in NDSU men's history, placing fifth in the javelin in 2017.
Number One
Payton Otterdahl is the first NDSU track & field athlete to enter the Division I national meet ranked No. 1 in the NCAA. The most recent individual track & field NCAA title won by a Bison was Nathan Schmidt's Division II decathlon crown in 2004.
Cinderella Story
Jacob McBride will fill the underdog role in Eugene after qualifying against the odds at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. McBride entered the West Prelims ranked 42nd out of 48 competitors in the hammer throw, but he launched a career-best throw by more than nine feet to finish 11th and advance to Oregon.
On the World Stage
Otterdahl currently ranks 11th in the world in the shot put this year. He had six throws over 20 meters in the shot put in the month of May alone.
Shot Put, Hammer Squads Lead Nation
The Bison men are ranked No. 1 in the country in the USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings in both the shot put and hammer throw. NDSU is the only team with four athletes over 59 feet in the shot put, as well as being the only team with four men beyond 60 meters in the hammer.
Nine Straight League Titles
The Bison men have captured nine consecutive Summit League outdoor team titles and 10 in 11 years since joining the league prior to the 2008 season.
