The North Dakota State men's cross country team will compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional in Stillwater, Okla., on Friday, Nov. 15. The men's 10-kilometer race is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Oklahoma State University Cross Country Course, following the women's 6k at 10:30 a.m.
The NCAA Midwest Regional will feature runners from 31 teams spanning nine states (Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota).
The Bison men finished 21st as a team last season. Junior Tim Heikkila is the top returning NDSU runner from that race, taking 87th overall last year. Junior Alex Bartholomay and Keiser Freetly also return from NDSU's top five finishers at the Midwest Regional a year ago.
A total of 31 teams will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 23. The top two teams at each of the nine regional meets automatically qualify, leaving 13 at-large bids. The selection process looks at each team's performance over the course of the season, along with their finish at the NCAA Regional.
Individually, 38 additional athletes per gender will qualify and the top four runners at each regional not on a qualifying team will automatically be selected.
The Bison are coming off their third straight runner-up team finish at the Summit League Championships held in Fargo on Nov. 2. Bartholomay placed seventh at the conference meet for first-team all-league honors, and Heikkila was ninth.
