Bison Men Hold Lead After Day One of Summit League Indoor Championships

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The North Dakota State men's track & field team holds the early lead in the team standings at the Summit League Indoor Championships, after the first day of the two-day meet was completed on Friday.
NDSU has 62 points through five events, with South Dakota State close behind in second with 55. South Dakota stands in third place with 51 points. The Bison men are attempting to win their fourth straight Summit League indoor team title.
Senior Payton Otterdahl was NDSU's lone individual champion on Friday, winning the Summit League weight throw title by a margin of eight and a half feet at 77-10.00 (23.72m). The Bison men finished 1-3-4-5 in the weight throw for 25 team points, with Alex Talley third, Trevor Otterdahl fourth, and Michael Keogan fifth. Keogan registered a personal-best throw of 63-08.25 (19.41m) to move up to No. 7 on the NDSU all-time list.
The NDSU men finished second in the distance medley relay with the team of Josh Samyn, Josh Knutson, Beau Brannan and Evan Kottsick. Their time of 10:08.00 ranks seventh in school history.
Sophomore Alex Bartholomay took third and Elliott Stone was fourth in the 3000m. Bartholomay clocked a personal-best 8:20.63 to rank sixth all-time at NDSU.
Sophomore Brandon Lewis came up big in the long jump, leaping 24-02.50 (7.38m) for Summit League runner-up honors. Senior Kelle'Mon Hinton (23-08.00) and sophomore Eric VanErp (23-02.50) placed fifth and eighth, respectively.
Sophomore Noah Shafer placed fifth in the pole vault, clearing a season-best 15-11.25 (4.86m).
In preliminary action, the Bison men advanced a number of runners to Saturday's finals.
Senior sprinter J.T. Butler ran personal-best times in both the 60m dash and 200m dash to qualify for the finals. He clocked 6.84 in the 60m to be the fourth-fastest qualifier to the final, and is now tied for fifth-fastest ever at NDSU. Butler came back later to run 21.67 in the 200m, ranking fourth-fastest in NDSU indoor history.
Senior Ryan Enerson was the third-fastest qualifier to the finals in the 60m hurdles, crossing the line in a season-best 8.31.
Sophomore Cody Roder (48.52) and senior Jacob Richter (48.84) both qualified for the 400m dash final. Freshmen Jacob Rodin (1:53.81) and Beau Brannan (1:54.21) both advanced to the 800m final with season-best times.
NDSU is also in position to score big with the conclusion of the heptathlon on Saturday. Junior Ben Klimpke leads with 2,917 points after four events, and Ryan Enerson is third with 2,892. Tyler Enerson currently stands fourth, Daniel Asa is sixth, Matt Moberg is seventh, and Chris McGlynn is ninth.
Last year, NDSU also scored exactly 62 points on the first day of the meet and went on to claim the team title. The Summit League Championships resume with the final three events of the heptathlon starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
