Senior thrower Payton Otterdahl will represent the North Dakota State University men's track & field team at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Friday, Mar. 8, and Saturday, Mar. 9, in Birmingham, Ala.
Otterdahl qualified as the top performer in both the shot put and weight throw, joining the nation's top 16 on the NCAA performance list this season.
The shot put will be contested at 7:20 p.m. on Friday. The weight throw is on Saturday, with the men's competition beginning at 2 p.m.
Otterdahl is the first NDSU men's track & field athlete to qualify for the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships in multiple events.

First Indoor Appearance
This will be Otterdahl's first appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships. He finished the 2017 indoor season ranked 24th in the NCAA in the weight throw and 34th in the shot put, and then redshirted the 2018 indoor season.
Top Four Shot Marks
Otterdahl owns the top four shot put marks in the NCAA this season, with four throws further than No. 2 Jordan Geist of Arizona on the national performance list.
Top Three Weight Marks
Otterdahl owns the top three weight throw marks in the NCAA this season, with three throws further than No. 2 Joseph Ellis of Michigan on the national performance list.
No. 2 in the World
Otterdahl is No. 2 on the world indoor list in the shot put this year, trailing only Olympic gold medalist Ryan Crouser, whose collegiate record Otterdahl broke at the Summit League Championships in February.

Placed 10th in both the shot put and discus at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., earning second-team All-America honors in both events
Competition Format
Each competitor in the throwing events is allowed three attempts in the preliminary round. The nine best marks, after tie-breaking, will advance to the final and earn three more throws.

The top eight finishers in all events will earn first team All-American honors, and places 9 through 16 will be named second team All-Americans.

Andy Lillejord is the highest indoor national-meet finisher in NDSU's Division I history, taking seventh place in the heptathlon at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships.

North Dakota State's most recent indoor NCAA national champion in men's indoor track & field was Ryan McGlynn, who won the Division II national title in the pole vault in 1996.
