Bison Edge Jackrabbits 3-2; Doubleheader Set for Friday

FARGO, N.D. - In the most important Summit League series of the season, the North Dakota State baseball team picked up a 3-2 win over South Dakota State in the first game of the final regular season series of the year.
The win moved the Bison to 19-22 overall and 15-13 in the Summit League, while the Jackrabbits dropped to 25-20 overall and 17-10 in the league. NDSU is now a win away from clinching a spot in the Summit League Tournament next week, while the Bison victory locked up the regular season crown for Omaha (28-19-1, 20-8 Summit). With rain in the forecast for Saturday, the Bison and Jackrabbits will now play a doubleheader on Friday, May 17, at Newman Outdoor Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. NDSU will honor its four seniors in a ceremony in between games.
South Dakota State started the scoring in the fourth inning, as Logan Holtz singled to right center to bring in Gus Steiger with two outs. The Bison had an answer in the bottom of the fifth, as Jake Malec reached on a single to shortstop that allowed Tucker Rohde to score.
The Jackrabbits took the lead back in the sixth inning, as Matthew Krambeck doubled down the left field line to bring in Josh Falk. In the bottom of the sixth, Brock Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to center field, as Peter Brookshaw came in to tie the game. Brookshaw reached with his first career triple to start the inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Bennett Hostetler doubled to left center, as Charley Hesse scored the go-ahead run. It was the sixth double of the season for Hostetler.
Malec finished with two hits, while Hostetler, Brookshaw and Anderson each had one. Max Loven improved to 4-2 on the mound, picking up the victory in seven innings of work. Loven struck out nine, while allowing two runs on five hits and three walks. Jordan Harms earned his third save of the season, as he tossed the final two innings, striking out two and allowing a walk.
With the victory, NDSU Head Coach Tod Brown moved into third in Summit League history with his 291st career win.
