FARGO, N.D. – Several freshman Bison wrestlers opened up their collegiate career over the weekend, competing unattached at the Cobber Invitational hosted by Concordia-Moorhead.
 
Four Bison picked up tournament victories in their respective weight classes including Gaven Sax (149), Michael Caliendo (165), DJ Parker (184) and Juan Mora (285). Overall, seven Bison claimed top three finishes.
 
Sax, a redshirt freshman, was 4-0 in the 149-pound bracket, picking up a pin and a tech fall victory. Sax defeated fellow Bison Clay Radenz in the championship. Radenz had a pair of tech fall victories on his way to an appearance in the championship match.
 
Caliendo needed three wins to secure the title in the 165-poud bracket. He finished with three wins by decision, including a 15-8 win in the championship match.
 
Parker swept his way through the 184-pound bracket with a pair of tech falls and a pin to advance to the championship match. Parker made it a clean sweep of the event with a 6-4 sudden victory win in the final.
 
Juan Mora wrapped up the championship wins for the Bison with three victories in the heavyweight division. Mora won all three of his duals with a 3-1 score, including a pair of wins by sudden victory in the semifinal and final.
 
Several other Bison had strong performances. Lathan Duda overcame a first-round loss in the 197-pound bracket, winning all four matches in the consolation bracket to go 4-1. Duda had a pin and a victory by major decision on his way to third overall.
 
Gabriel Schumm also had a first-round loss in the 141-pound bracket. Schumm would go on to win his three consolation bracket matches, including a major decision in the consolation final to take third overall.
