GREELEY, Colo. - The North Dakota State baseball team scored 10 runs in the first four innings, cruising to an 11-1 win over Northern Colorado in the series finale. The two teams split the four games over the weekend.
NDSU improved to 7-3 on the year, while Northern Colorado dropped to 4-7. The Bison return to action on Friday, March 12, as they open a four-game series at Dayton. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. (central) in Dayton, Ohio.
Jack Simonsen led the Bison with three hits, while
Jake Malec and
Peter Brookshaw each had a pair. Simonsen, Malec and Brookshaw each drove in three runs, while Malec scored three times and Simonsen twice.
Ben Smith improved to 2-0 on the mound, allowing just one run on six hits in 6.1 innings of work. Smith struck out three.
Parker Harm closed out the game, striking out the two batters he faced.
The Bison used the long ball in the first three innings, as Brookshaw homered in the first, Malec in the second and Simonsen in the third. Brookshaw and Simonsen each had two-run shots, while Malec's brought in three, as the Bison led 7-0. In the fourth,
Charley Hesse doubled to bring in
Bennett Hostetler before a ground ball by
Will Busch brought in
Tucker Rohde. A double by Simonsen in the fourth drove in Hesse. NDSU's final run came in the seventh, as Brookshaw singled to bring in Malec.
