BROOKINGS, S.D. - North Dakota State and South Dakota State split a baseball doubleheader on Friday, with the Bison taking the first game 5-0 and the Jacks winning the second in extra innings 3-2.
NDSU moved to 24-11 overall and 13-8 in the Summit League, while South Dakota State is now 10-20 overall and 5-9 in league play. The two teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday, as Sunday's game has been canceled due to weather. First pitch of the doubleheader will start at 12 p.m.
Jake Malec,
Peter Brookshaw and
Bennett Hostetler each had two hits in the opener, while Malec scored a pair of runs. Malec extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
Tristen Roehrich had a no-decision on the mound, tossing 4.2 innings. Roehrich allowed six hits and three walks, while striking out four.
Jake Drew picked up the win, as he improved to 3-0 on the year in 1.1 innings of work. Drew struck out three of the four batters he faced.
Parker Harm picked up his fifth save of the season in three innings, allowing a hit and two walks, while striking out six. Harm moved into seventh in school history with 164 career strikeouts.
NDSU's first three runs came via solo home runs, starting with
Nick Emanuel in the second inning. In the third, Malec and Brookshaw each homered in back-to-back at-bats. In the eighth inning,
Tucker Rohde scored on an error as
Nathan VerMaas reached on a fielder's choice. NDSU added another run in the ninth, as Hostetler singled to bring in Malec.
Will Busch had two of NDSU's four hits in the nightcap, while
Jack Simonsen and
Calen Schwabe each added one.
Max Loven had a no-decision in seven innings of work, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out a season-high nine.
Wyatt Nelson suffered the loss, as he dropped to 0-1 in an inning of work. Nelson allowed a run on three hits and a walk, while striking out one.Â
VerMaas scored the first run in the third inning, as he scored on a passed ball. Busch would score in the fifth, as Simonsen singled to right field. In the bottom of the seventh, Ryan McDonald hit a two-run home run to tie the game for the Jackrabbits and force extra innings. In the ninth inning, Drew Beazley singled through the left side, as Carson Max scored to give the Jacks the 3-2 win.
