Benji Phillips and
Alex Talley registered meet records on their way to conference titles, headlining the performances of the North Dakota State men's track & field team on the opening day of the Summit League Outdoor Championships.

Phillips threw a career-best and meet-record 246-11 (75.27m) to win the javelin title. He is now No. 6 in the NCAA this season, and is just over seven feet shy of Matti Mortimore's NDSU school record.

Talley launched a meet-record 228-11 (69.78m) to take first place in the hammer, defending his conference crown from 2019 in the event.

NDSU's
Trevor Otterdahl registered a personal-best by more than eight feet in the hammer throw to take second place, throwing 215-11 (65.83m). He moved up to fifth-best in school history, and now also ranks 35th in the nation this year.

Bison freshman
Matt Kraft earned All-Summit League honors in the javelin, throwing 201-4 (61.38m) for a third-place finish.
Ty Ogren placed fifth for NDSU.

Freshman
Zach Johnson (Moorhead, Minn.) raced to fifth place in the 10,000m, running a time of 30:57.50 which lands him just outside the NDSU all-time Top 10.

Tristan Bush took sixth in the hammer for NDSU with a mark of 186-11 (56.98m).

The Bison men stand first, fourth, and seventh in the Summit League decathlon standings after five events on Day 1. Senior
Tony Ukkelberg leads with 3,878 points,
Eric VanErp is fourth with 3,474, and
Tyler Enerson is in seventh at 3,170.

Ukkelberg opened the meet with a career-best 100m dash time of 11.02 and closed the day with a personal-best 400m time of 52.82. He also had the top marks in the decathlon field for the shot put and long jump.

Action resumes Friday with the decathlon 110m hurdles at 11 a.m. Field events begin at 4 p.m. Friday.
