ST. PAUL, Minn. –
Tristen Roehrich fired a career-high eight strikeouts to help lead the North Dakota State baseball team to its second straight win over St. Thomas, 8-7, on Sunday afternoon at Koch Diamond.
St. Thomas (5-19, 2-7 Summit) jumped out to early 2-0 lead in the opening frame after Brigs Richartz connected on a two RBI home run into left field.
Peter Brookshaw answered for the Bison (19-10, 7-2 Summit) in the bottom half with a two RBI home run into left field to lock the contest, 2-2. The Tommies then went on to open up a 5-2 edge after adding on runs in the second and third frames.
St. Thomas continued to surge into the fourth stretching its lead to 6-2 after taking advantage of a fielding error.
Charley Hesse sparked the Bison in the bottom half launching a three RBI home run into left to pull NDSU back within one, 6-5.
Calen Schwabe then tied the contest, 6-6, in the next at bat with his first home run of the season.
After a scoreless fifth frame, the Bison stole the lead in the sixth following a home run from
Druw Sackett to left field to make the score 7-6. Schwabe extended the advantage up to 8-6 after he drove an RBI single into right field. The Tommies cut the deficit to one in the seventh, 8-7, following a home run off the bat of Kyle Halverson. St. Thomas made one final comeback attempt in the ninth getting two runners on, but Roehrich worked the Bison out of the jam to preserve the 8-7 victory.
NDSU totaled nine hits as a team, including four home runs. Hesse paced the Bison going 2-of-3 at the plate with a team-best three RBI and two runs.
Roehrich (4-1) picked up the win tossing a career-high eight strikeouts with no walks over 6.0 innings.
Evan Sankey started the contest and posted one strikeout over 3.0 innings.
NDSU will be back in action against Dakota Wesleyan on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field.
