TULSA, Okla. – The North Dakota State baseball team edged South Dakota State, 7-4, in the second round of the Summit League Championship on Friday afternoon at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Druw Sackett got the Bison (31-8) off to a fast start after he connected on a solo home run to make the score 1-0 in the opening frame.
Peter Brookshaw stretched the edge up to 2-0 in the third with an RBI single into right center. The Jackrabbits (22-23) answered back in the bottom of the third with a home run off the bat of Henry George to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Brookshaw added the second home run of the game for NDSU to right field. The two RBI shot extended the Bison lead up to 4-1. Following a scoreless sixth and seventh inning, NDSU added insurance with a three run eighth to increase its edge to 7-1 after
Terrell Huggins delivered an RBI single and
Cadyn Schwabe beat the throw home. The Jackrabbits attempted to rally in the bottom half of the eighth with a three RBI home run to trim the edge down to 7-4, but
Tristen Roehrich closed out the final frame with two strikeouts to seal the 7-4 victory.
Each team connected on eight hits in the contest. Brookshaw paced the Bison going 2-of-4 at the plate with three RBI, two runs and a stolen base. Sackett also went 2-of-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.
Cade Feeney (7-3) got the start on the mound and totaled four strikeouts with one walk and one run over 7.0 innings. Roehrich finished the final 2.0 innings and tossed four strikeouts with one walk.
NDSU will be back in action tomorrow and will face the loser of Oral Roberts and Omaha. First pitch is set for 4:05 p.m. at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
