NDSU Falls to Omaha in Summit League Championship

TULSA, Okla. –  The North Dakota State baseball team came up short against Omaha, 5-3, at the Summit League Championship on Saturday afternoon at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

With the loss, NDSU finishes its season with a 31-19 overall record. The Bison, who won their first Summit League regular season title, reached the 30-win mark for only the seventh time in program history. Omaha (26-30) advances to face Oral Roberts (37-18) in the final round of the Summit League Championship tomorrow at 1:05 p.m.

The Mavericks started fast after Eduardo Rosario connected on a two RBI home run in the opening inning to make the score 2-0. Jack Simonsen cut the deficit in half, 2-1, in the bottom of the first after he sent an RBI single into left.

Omaha responded to add a run in the third after Jack Lombardi connected on an RBI single into left and then homered in the sixth to increase the Maverick lead to 4-1. Logan Williams responded for NDSU with a two RBI home run of his own to pull the Bison back within one, 4-3, in the sixth.

The contest then went scoreless for two innings until Lombardi added insurance in the ninth with an RBI single into right to extend the edge to 5-3. The Bison made one final comeback attempt after Cadyn Schwabe was hit by a pitch and Terrell Huggins singled in the ninth. However, the Mavericks sealed the 5-3 win after Calen Schwabe grounded into a double play to end the contest.

Druw Sackett led the Bison with two hits and two runs. Williams added two hits, including a double and team-high 12th home run of the season. He also added two RBI and one run to his stat line.

Evan Sankey (5-4) made the start on the mound and tossed two strikeouts with one walk over 5.1 innings. Jake Drew also provided 3.0 innings of relief and contributed two strikeouts.
