FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State baseball team scored its most runs in a single-game since 2008 to pick up a 21-3 win over Western Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field.
With the win, the Bison completed the series sweep and have won each of their last four games to improve to 15-26 (10-5 Summit) on the season. Western Illinois falls to 5-33 (2-10 Summit) on the season with the loss.
NDSU plated its most runs in a game since it scored 22 against Mary on April 15, 2008 and was four short of the program record of 25 runs that was set on March 31, 2001 at Northwest Missouri State. Nine different Bison scored at least two runs with
Druw Sackett,
James Dunlap and
Carson Hake each contributing a team-best three.
NDSU also connected 16 hits with five different players logging multiple hit games. Dunlap led the way with three hits in four at-bats, including two home runs in the fifth inning. He also added a career-high five RBI with three runs and one stolen base to his stat line.
Parker Puetz (1-0) earned his first career win throwing a game-best five strikeouts with one walk over 6.0 innings of work.
Skyler Riedinger finished out the final frame with two strikeouts.
After the Bison built a 6-1 advantage in the fourth inning, NDSU erupted for nine runs on seven hits in the fifth frame to open up a 15-1 lead following a two-run home run from Dunlap into right field. The Bison continued to surge into the sixth sending across six runs on four hits to make the score 21-3 after
Jack Steil drove a two-run single into left field. NDSU went on to pick up its third straight run rule victory over Western Illinois, 21-3.
NDSU will be back in action at Nebraska on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
